There are two ways to get cartoon art from a photo: an instant filter app, or a portrait made for you, with a preview and revisions you can ask for. This guide is about the second route: how to choose the photo, which cartoon style fits, and what happens after you order.
If all you need is a quick profile picture, an app is fine. If you want corrections or a print for the wall, a portrait made for you is the better fit.
Start with a photo that shows the face clearly
The photo you start with matters more than anything else. Look for:
- Good light. Daylight by a window or outdoors works best. Dark rooms and direct flash flatten the face and hide detail.
- Both eyes visible. Straight-on or a slight angle is ideal. Sunglasses, a hat brim that shades the eyes, hair across the face or a turned-away head all give less to work with.
- The expression you want. A cartoon keeps the mood of the photo, so choose the one where the person looks like themselves, not the one where they were caught mid-blink.
- No heavy filters. Beauty filters and strong color effects change how a face looks, so a plain, unedited shot is the better source.
- Enough sharpness. A recent phone photo is usually sharp enough. A quick test: zoom in on the face, and if the eyes are still clear, you're set.
You don't need a studio shot. One clear photo beats five blurry ones.
Choose a cartoon style
Each style has its own mood. Pick by who the portrait is for.
- Simpsons style is bold, instantly recognizable and playful. It is the funny one, a good fit for a birthday or a gift meant to get a laugh.
- Pixar style has warm lighting and expressive eyes, the look of a modern animated film. It suits couples, families and anything sentimental.
- Vector style uses flat color and clean shapes for a polished, modern look, and works well in a minimalist room or as a stylish gift.
Prefer something less cartoonish? The pencil sketch is classic graphite shading, a quieter choice for a traditional space.
Couples, families and groups
You don't need a photo where everyone is together. Upload up to five photos and they are merged into one artwork, so a family spread across different cities, or people who have never been photographed side by side, can share one portrait. What to put in your notes
The product page has a box for notes to the artist, and a few lines can help the first preview land closer:
- Details to keep, such as glasses, a tattoo, jewelry or a signature hairstyle.
- Anything the photo doesn't show clearly, like the real hair or eye color in a shadowy shot.
- Anything to leave out, like a background object or a logo on clothing.
- The feel you want, such as goofy, elegant or sweet.
Digital file, poster or canvas
You choose the format when you order:
- Digital file. A high-resolution file you download from your order page once you've approved the preview, with no physical print. Print it yourself, use it online, or decide on a size later. You can type the shape you want, such as 8×10, or leave the field blank and the result will usually follow your photo's shape.
- Poster. A paper print, lighter than a canvas. It is printed with giclée (fine-art inkjet) on 240gsm matte fine art paper with a smooth, fine-grain texture. The paper is sustainably sourced and the poster contains no plastic.
- Canvas. Printed with latex inks on stretched canvas with a gallery-style finish, ready to hang with no frame. The wood comes from sustainable forests, the inks have zero VOC emissions, and the canvas is vegan-friendly.

What it costs
We don't print a price here because it depends on what you choose, and the product page always shows the current total before you check out. Two things set it:
- Format and size. A digital file has one price whatever shape you pick. Posters and canvases are priced by size, and a poster costs less than a canvas of the same size.
- People and pets. The first one is included. Each additional person or pet adds the same fixed amount.

What happens after you order
- Upload and describe. Choose your photo or photos, pick a style and size, say how many people and pets are in it, and add your notes.
- Pay at checkout. Payment is taken in full at checkout, and it authorizes us to begin work.
- Preview. You get a preview to review before anything is finalized.
- Revisions. If anything is off, use Request Changes on your order page and say what to change. Every order includes unlimited revisions, and nothing is final until you approve it.
- Delivery. Most digital orders are ready within 2 to 4 days. Posters and canvases are printed and shipped by a print partner, so delivery time varies by size and destination.
